Sunsuit and Striped Shirt

This is a cute little outfit. The sunsuit is knitted in one piece. You may use baby yarn or cotton yarn for this project.

Materials:

Size 4 or 5 needles

One 2 oz. Skein sport weight or baby yarn, small applique (optional)

SUNSUIT (worked in one piece)

Beg at back waistband, cast on 36 sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 6 rows.

Next rows, k1 row, p1 row until total length is 4 inches.

Leg Shaping:

Bind off 3 sts beg of next 2 rows. Bind off 2 sts beg of next 2 rows. Now dec 1 st both sides alternate rows until 14 sts rem. Work 6 rows even. (this area will be the crotch) Next, inc 1 st both sides alternate rows until there are 26 sts. Cast on 2 sts beg of next 2 rows, cast on 3 sts beg of following 2 rows.

Front:

Work even until total length of front is the same as the back up to the waistband, then work waistband and bib as follows:
Work in ribbing (k1, p1) for 5 rows. Continue in ribbing, bind off 6 sts beg of next 2 rows. Next will be the bib area - ending in right side.

Row 1: k1, p1 three times, purl to within last 6 sts, p1, k1 three times.

Row 2: Continue 6 sts in pattern, knit to within last 6 sts, continue 6 sts in pattern.

Repeat last 2 rows for 1-1/2 inches, ending with Row 2.

Next Row: k1, p1 across - make sure last six stitches at each end are the same in patternn. Do this for 5 rows.

(this is an edging for top of the bib) Continuing to work the 6 stitches in pattern, then bind off 12 stitches to the last 6 stitches, work in pattern. (you will begin now with the straps)

Straps

Work the 6 sts on each side. You may add another ball of yarn to do each side evenly or one side at a time.

Straps should be knitted to the length of 6 inches. Bind off.

Finishing:

Sew side seams. You may add snaps to the straps or stitch down to the waistband. You may cross straps. Sew a small applique to the bib front (optional)

STRIPED SHIRT

Size 4 or 5 needles

Again, using sport weight yarn or baby yarn

You may use white and same color yarn as the sunsuit bibs to match.

Front:

Using white, cast on 38 sts. Work in k1, p1 for 6 rows.

Still using white yarn:

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Purl

Continue for 4 rows.

Change to other colored yarn. ( that matches the sunsuit)

Repeat Row 1 and 2 for 4 rows. This is your striped pattern. Repeat in this striped pattern until total length is 2 inches.

Armhole Shaping:

Continue striped pattern.

Bind off 3 sts beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both sides next row (30 sts rem). Work in striped pattern until length of armhole measures 1-1/2 inches from bound off sts.

Neck Shaping:

Continue striped pattern.

Work 10 sts, bind off center 10 sts, finish end of row. You may work both sides by adding another ball of yarn or work separately and repeat other side.

Continuing in striped pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge, alternate rows 2 times.

Work even until armhole measures 3 inches. Bind off.

Back:

Work as front until armhole shaping is complete. Work even until armhole measures 2 inches. Now work neck shaping as for front.

Sleeves:

Cast on 38 sts in white . Work k1, p1 for 4 rows. Next 4 rows in white, (knit 1 row, purl 1 row)

next 4 rows in colored yarn to match sunsuit.. Continue in striped pattern until 2 inches. Bind off.

Finishing

Sew one shoulder seam. With white yarn, with right side of work facing, pick up 60 sts. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 3 rows. Bind off LOOSELY. ( this is so that bind off area will be able to stretch over the babies head -I usually change to larger needles, in this case, I would use size 7 or 8 needles to bind off.)

Sew rem shoulder seam Sew upper edge of sleeve into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams.
